Day Tours From Marrakech:

Marrakesh or Marrakech (pronounced Marra-kesh), is a major city in the North African nation of Morocco. Marrakesh is Morocco's fourth largest city after Casablanca, Fes and Rabat. Located near the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh is southwest of the capitol Rabat and northeast of Agadir. The red walls of the city, built byAli ibn Yusuf in 1122-1123, and various buildings constructed in red sandstone during this period, have given the city the nickname of the "Red City". Marrakesh is famous for its snake charmers and traditional souks. The souks offer an incredible shopping experience with a myriad of narrow winding streets that lead through a series of smaller markets clustered by trade. Through the squawking chaos of the poultry market, the gory fascination of the open-air butchers' shops and the uncountable number of small and specialist traders, just wandering around the streets can pass an entire day.








 

DAY 1: MARRAKECH – AIT BEN HADDOU – DADES GORGE

We’ll pick up you at your hotel or Riad in Marrakech and we’ll drive to Ouarzazate through the dramatic Tizi ‘n’ Tichka pass (2260m), over the High Atlas Mountains, appreciating the beauty of the landscape on the twisted road through Berber villages. Arriving at the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, the largest Kasbah in Morocco, now a UNESCO matrimonial historical site and still home to many Glaoui family members. Lunch is by the Kasbah before we continue on to Dades Gorge via Ouarzazate, “the Hollywood of Africa” along the “Road of the thousand Kasbahs”- the fascinating “sand castles” before stopping at Kalaat Mgouna, “the rose’s city” known for roses and its annual festival during the roses harvest in May. Eventually we’ll arrive at our hotel in the heart of the Dades Gorge. Overnight in our Hotel/Riad.

DAY 2: DADES GORGE – TODRA GORGE – MERZOUGA (CAMEL TREKKING)

After breakfast in the hotel, we’ll drive back through the valley to see the amazing rock formation “the monkey toes”, and the still-standing 19th century Kasbah of Ait Yul. Leaving the Dades valley towards Tinrghir and the Todra valley you’ll see panoramic views of the old mud Berber villages overlooking the valley. Arriving at the Gorge you’ll walk under the 300m high red cliff, where many Rock-climbers come to enjoy their preferred sport. Continuing on to Erfoud and Rissani where we’ll have lunch and afterwards, we’ll leave for the village of Merzouga – the home of your guide Youssef and where your camel will be awaiting you. You’ll be welcomed with a glass of mint tea and a desert scarf before your ride starts heading into the mysterious sand-sea of the Erg-Chebbi, guided by an experienced camel guide of course. Here you will spend your first night under the stars, or if you prefer, in a traditional Berber nomad tent.

DAY 3: MERZOUGA – OUARZAZATE

After breakfast with the Bedouin family you’ll peacefully camel-trek back to the village of Merzouga, appreciating the unique beauty of the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes – changing with the light as the day progresses. Arriving late morning back in Merzouga. And after a shower in the guesthouse, we’ll leave for Rissani – once Sijilmassa – (the foundation of the Alaouite dynasty, the current ruling family). With most of the woman veiled, and men hooded, this is a very traditional Moroccan town. We’ll continue driving towards Agdez, via Alnif and Tazarine, before arriving at the fascinating Draa Valley and your hotel at the edge of the Atlas Mountains, along which lay hundreds of Berber Kasbahs.

DAY 4: OUARZAZATE – MARRAKECH

After a luxurious breakfast in the Kasbah, we’ll head to Marrakech via Ourazazate, enjoying the panoramic views of palm groves and moon-like landscapes contrasting with the Berber villages and the Saghro mountains; an area that has been a popular location for Hollywood films, including The Last Temptation of Christ, Jewel of the Nile and the Mummy. Our journey will continue through the majestic Tizi ‘n’ Tichka Pass (2260m) over the High Atlas Mountains, before arriving at your accommodation in Marrakech, where the tour ends.

We’ll continue on to Erfoud and Rissani where we’ll have lunch – the home of your guide Moha – You’ll be welcomed with a glass of mint tea then leaving for the village of Merzouga checking into our Hotel/Riad.

DAY 3: MERZOUGA AREA AND THE CAMEL TREK

After breakfast we can start exploring the area, visiting the village of the Gnawi people, originally slaves from Sudan to experience their music and lifestyle. Not far away there’s the lake of Merzouga, with its flamingos. You may also like to visit the nomad wire house where many Berber handicrafts are priced lower than in the big cities. By the afternoon you’ll be ready for your camel ride. Guided by an experienced camel driver, you’ll explore within the mysterious sand-sea of the Erg-Chebbi for 2-3 hrs before spending your first night under the stars, or if you prefer, in a traditional Berber nomad tent. Dinner will be served in the tent where you will spend the night.

DAY 4: MERZOUGA – FES

Your camel man will wake you up early in the morning to watch what well may be the best sunrise of your life. Afterwards, you’ll peacefully camel-trek back to your Riad appreciating the unique beauty of the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes – changing with the light as the day progresses. After breakfast in the local guest house we’ll travel to Fes via Errachidia along the magnificent Ziz Gorges carved through volcanic rock and through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass to Midelt. stopping in Zaida to enjoy a barbecue and refresh with a glass of mint tea before continuing on to Azrou, a Berber village in the Middle Atlas Mountains. There we’ll stop to see the Barbarian apes in the famous Cedar forest. Then it’s on to Ifrane - “the French village”, stopping for a picture and drink before arriving at your accommodation in Fes where the tour ends.













 

1 day: Marrakeh – Ouarzazate

We will pick up you at your hotel or riad in Marrakech and driving across the High Atlas mountains. At panoramic viewpoints, there will opportunities to stop and take photos. The first scheduled stop is at the Kasbah of Telouet, which served as a palatial residence and the headquarters of the powerful Glaoui tribe. Here you will stop to have a leisurely lunch. Then the route crosses the Oumila Valley and leads to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, the oldest and most famous Kasbah in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage site. After visiting the kasabh there is another 35 kilometres of road as far as Ouarzazate, where you spend the night in a hotel.

2 day: Ouarzazate – Todra gorges

Morning departure to the Todra Gorge, passing the Oasis of Skoura, where numerous ancient kasbahs, some sadly in ruins, stand amongst the palm trees. From here, our route takes us through Kela’a M’gouna, the Valley of Roses, where we stop to see cosmetic articles made locally from the valley’s abundant blossoms. These products are well-known throughout Morocco and are highly valued. We drive off-road to the Dades Gorge for lunch, after which there is time for a stroll alongside the river before continuing to the Toudgha Gorge for the second night in a hotel or Kasbah there.

3 day: Todra Gorges – Merzouga

After breakfast, there is time to walk by the river before continuing to Toudgha to the very different gorges there. Lunch will either be here in the gorges or later at the bivouac at the Erg Chebbi dunes. You drive there via the Oasis of Tafilalet, Erfoud and Rissani. After a welcomeing glass of tea, you can take a two-hour camel ride in the Sahara. The sunset from the top of the dunes is spectacular (250m) and afterwards there is dinner and the night in a nomad tent at the foot of the dunes.

4 day: Merzouga – Agdez

If you wake up early enough, you can watch the spectacle of the sunrise, when the colour of the dunes and the play of shadows are an awesome sight. The drive back east to the Dra’a Valley takes us via the villages of Tazzarine (featured in the film ‘Babel’) and N’Qob, where we have lunch. In the afternoon we continue to Tanasikht, along the track of the ancient caravan route, reaching the Dra’a valley, abundant with large palm trees and ancient kasbahs, at Agdez, where we spend the night in a kasbah.

5 day: Agdez – Chagaga

After breakfast there is an opportunity to visit the Tamnougalte Kasbah, the oldest in the Dra'a Valley and which some consider to be the most interestng. Some of it is still inhabited and other parts crumbling away. The way follows the ancient track of the caravan route to Zagora. From here the trip continues along paved roads to the village of M’hamid, which marks the end of the paved road and the beginning of the Sahara. Here we pause for lunch in a riad set in a beautiful garden full of palm trees and with a swimming pool. In the afternoon, we leave for the Erg Chagaga dunes (300m) with 60km off-road. This route passes different features of the desert; ‘erg’, ‘reg’, ‘hammada’ and oases. These dunes are far away from civilization, in the desert proper …… and the silence and the expanse of the sand are overwhelming. Dinner and the night are in a bivouac there.

6 day: Chagaga – Fint oasis

After breakfast, the road takes us through another 90km of desert with varying scenery; Lake Iriqui, the mountains and fossils. Lunch will be in Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert, where it is also possible to freshen up with a shower. From here the drive back north is along paved roads via the village of Taznakht, famous for its Berber carpets and rugs. Before we reach Ouarzazate, we turn off the main road and head for the mountains to the hidden oasis of Fint, which was once the head of the caravan route, where the caravans converged before their goods, slaves, gold and salt were distributed across Morocco. Here the night is spent in a traditional auberge.

7 day: Fint oasis – Marrakech

After breakfast, we drive back to Ouarzazate to Kasbah Taourirt, once owned by the Pashas of Marrakesh, the Galoui family. From here the road goes north again to Marrakesh, stopping for lunch in the mountains and reaching Marrakesh by the early evening. Ends the tour!









 

1day: Marrakech – Ouarzazate

We will pick up you at your hotel or riad in Marrakech to cross the High Atlas Mountains. After the Tichka pass, you leave the main road and take a side road to the Telouet Kasbah, which belonged to the Lords of the Atlas, the Glaoui family, and which now stands in ruins after the last Pasha fled the country following the departure of the French. From there you continue for lunch at Ait Ben Haddou along the newly asphalted connecting road. This is the most famous Kasbah in Morocco and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which we visit after lunch. Later we continue as far as Ouarzazate to spend the night in a riad there.

2 day: Ouarzazate – Chagaga

After breakfast the route continues to the Dra'a Valley with a stop to visit Kasbah Tamnougalte, the oldest Kasbah in the Dra'a Valley, and still partly inhabited. We continue by taking the ancient caravan road between the river and the mountains. On the way, we pass many villages and gardens so that you can gain a better idea of the way of life along the oases. We drive to M’hamid, the gate to the desert, to the dunes of Erg Lihoudi, where we stop for lunch. Here a two-hour camel ride is scheduled. Later we continue to the Erg Chagaga dunes (300m) with 60km of off-road driving. This route passes different features of the desert; ‘erg’, ‘reg’, ‘hammada’, oases. These dunes are far away from civilization, in the desert proper ……. and the silence and the expanse of the sand are overwhelming. Dinner and a night’s sleep are in a bivouac of nomad tents.

3 day: Chagaga – Taroudant

After breakfast we drive another 90 km across the Sahara over the stony desert, “reg” and “hammada” and across the now dried-up Lake Iriqui. In the middle of this lake, we can search for fossils. At the edge of the desert at Foum Zguid, we drive north to Taznakht, famous for its Berber gelims and carpets, where we stop for lunch. After crossing the Tizi-n-Ikhsane and Tizi-n-Tighatine passes, we reach Taliouine, the heart of the saffron growing region. The road takes us on to Taroudant, where we stop for the night in a riad.

4 day: Taroudant – Essaouira

In the morning there is a visit to the town known as “the little Marrakesh”. It is spectacular for its massive ramparts and beautiful medina. From here you travel along the Souss river valley with all its argane groves as far as Agadir. The road then travels up the coast along the Paradise Valley, driving through Taghazout and through the mountains. On arriving in Essaouira, you can explore the town, the Skala, the medina and all its innumerable shops as well as the sea front with its fresh fish restaurants. The night is spent in Essaouira.

5 day: Essaouira – Marrakech

After breakfast you can continue to wander round Essaouira, getting to know it better, perhaps enjoying more of the fresh fish. Return to Marrakech, stopping in a forest of argane trees and the co-operative of argane oil producers. We pass many Berber villages on the way. Ends the tour!
